Questions and Answers about Porcelain Veneer Dentistry

Bite and Occlusion Veneer Repair Gary Solomon

Porcelain Veneer Repair in Texas

1. I've heard a lot about cosmetic dentistry lately. What are porcelain veneers and how can they change a person's smile?

Porcelain veneers are thin sheets of porcelain that are placed on the top surface of the tooth. They are a beautiful and natural-looking way to conceal imperfections such as chipped, discolored, or worn teeth. They are also referred to as, "instant orthodontics" since they can be used to close spaces or straighten crooked teeth giving you a fast alternative to orthodontics and a gorgeous smile in as little as two visits.

2. I'm worried the veneers will not look natural. I don't want people to refer to my teeth as "chicklets". How do I know they will look real?

The innovations in cosmetic dentistry over the past 5-10 years have greatly improved the appearance of porcelain restorations. By utilizing my extensive clinical training and using a high quality lab technician, the porcelain veneers will look very natural and beautiful. The end result is a youthful, revitalized smile.

3. I have an extremely busy schedule with my work and family. How long can I expect it to take before I can have a beautiful, "Hollywood smile"?

In most cases, the process of smile design can be completed in as little as 2 to 3 visits. However, if a person has more complex dental issues, the treatment plan could be more complex, and take up to several months to complete. This can be determined at your first diagnostic records appointment.

4. Will I be able to eat with porcelain veneers as I do now with my natural teeth?

Porcelain veneers are just as functional as your natural teeth. However, anything that can break a natural tooth can break a veneer. It is important that you continue to care for your veneers as you would your natural tooth structure so they can last many, many years.

5. How often will I need to replace my veneers?

There is no reason why your veneers will not last 10, 15, even 20 years or more with proper care and maintenance. Dental cleanings 2-3 times per year should be continued as directed to maintain your beautiful, revitalized smile. Dental cleanings are the key in preventing decay and maintaining healthy gum tissue-two essential elements in keeping your veneers as long as possible.

6. Do I have to have my tooth structure altered to have veneers placed?

Usually the original tooth structure requires preparation prior to the placement of veneers to maintain the natural look and thickness of your original teeth. However, through the advances of cosmetic dentistry, the "no prep veneer" referred to as, "Lumineers" can be used in some cases. We will discuss which option is best for you so you are ensured the optimal result.

7. I'm worried that if I have veneers, they will come off, which could cause embarrassment in a personal or professional situation. How likely is that to happen?

Several factors can cause a veneer to break or come off unexpectedly. If the veneers are placed correctly and the bite is equilibrated, there is minimal chance they will fail. In the rare occasion of fracture or failed bonding, a brief, 30-minute visit to the dentist can typically correct this issue.
